Artificial intelligence technology has started to have a tremendous impact on our lives over the last few years. One survey found that 55% of Americans say that they use AI on a regular basis.
While there are a lot of positive things about AI, there are also some downsides to it as well. A growing number of people are trying to use AI detectors to mitigate the risks of artificial intelligence.
However, some people are still skeptical that AI detectors actually work. Fortunately, a growing body of research suggests that they are actually very effective and can detect ChatGPT. Keep reading to learn more.
What Are Some of the Reasons People Are Turning to these tools?
There are a variety of reasons that AI detectors have become very popular in recent years. Some of their primary benefits include the following:
- Teachers are struggling to deal with an influx of students that are using AI to cheat on assignments. One survey found that 43% of students have cheated by using AI at least once in the past. An estimated 22% of students continue to do so, even though they believe that it is cheating. Teachers are using AI detectors to identify students that are cheating on assignments.
- Many online publishers don’t like posting content that is made with AI. They have started using AI detectors to determine if their writers have been using it or not.
- A lot of black hat hackers have started using AI to create fake reviews to dupe people into downloading malware and using it to create phishing emails. One analysis found that 82.6% of phishing emails seem to have been written with AI. A lot of cybersecurity professionals have started using AI detectors to prevent cybercrime.
AI detectors are going to become more popular in the coming years as people tried to mitigate the downsides of AI.
Do They Actually Help Identify Text Made with ChatGPT?
There are a number of detectors on the market. Many of them have become very effective at identifying content that is made with generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT.
We conducted an experiment a few months ago by testing around a dozen articles that were written with ChatGPT and other AI tools. We found that even one of the less popular AI detectors was able to identify content that was made with AI around 80% of the time. One of the articles that did not get flagged as being AI generated was made a few years before ChatGPT was released. This article was probably made with a different AI model and had more primitive algorithms. It also seemed to have more spelling mistakes than most content made with modern generative AI tools.
Other technology experts have run similar tests with other AI detectors. They have found that some of them have a nearly 100% success rate.
There are a number of ways that AI detectors are able to identify AI generated content. Here are some of the things that they look for:
- Generative AI tools tend to use a lot of the same words and phrases. AI detectors are more likely to flag content as being AI generated if they see them.
- AI content tends to follow similar logical patterns. AI detectors are more likely to flag content if it does not have any unique ideas.
- Content that is made with generative AI tools tends to have sentences that are all of similar length. AI detectors are more likely to flag content if sentence length doesn’t vary much.
- AI content also rarely has any grammatical or spelling errors. Therefore, perfectly written content is more likely to be flagged by AI detectors.
Hey I detectors are trained on data sets of both content generated by humans and AI. It is getting better and better at distinguishing between the two.
Are There Factors That Can Make it Difficult to Identify Content Made with ChatGPT?
AI detectors are very effective at identifying content that is made with artificial intelligence. However, they are not 100% foolproof. There are things that people can do to help bypass them. Some of the hacks that writers can use to trick them include the following:
- Running them through a humanizer that is programmed to make them sound more like a human writer.
- Using prompts that tell the generative AI tool to write in a more casual way that is going to sound less machine-like
- Editing the content afterwards to avoid common patterns that are found in AI content
- Replacing common words that are used in AI content with synonyms
People taking these steps will have an easier time tricking an AI detector. However, they aren’t perfect and many advanced AI detectors are still able to successfully detect AI content even when writers go the extra mile.
